How a Screen Writing Class Made Me More Confident
For the last four weeks, I've been enrolled in a Women's Screenwriting Workshop through Super Heroines, Etc. When I signed up for the class, I was hesitant for a few reasons. First, it had been a while since I had done any sort of creative writing at all and I was daunted by the idea of such a big commitment to something I did not feel skilled in. Second, I've never really been confident in my own skills at writing. And lastly, I'm terrible in group class settings where I'm supposed to be participating in discussion - especially because I never know what to say. However, I got over my imposter syndrome and signed up (partially because someone needed to be the Super Heroines, Etc. point of contact and partially because I had an idea for a sitcom). And I'm so glad I did! Now I have an awesome screenplay that's almost ready for filming and I gained amazing confidence in my own creative abilities. Here are some things I learned about myself:
I'm More Creative Than I Think I Am
As much as I worry about my creativity, my classmates were very encouraging and definitely made me feel like my little idea had potential. Each week of playing with my characters and the storyline helped me understand that creativity isn't just a really good idea, it's a lot of hard work and so much tweaking!
I'm Funnier Than I Think I Am
I definitely laugh at my own jokes, but I'm never really sure if anyone else finds me funny. With wanting to write a sitcom, this experience helped me see that I can be funny. Again, it does take work to be funny. Drafting and re-drafting a joke to make it just right.
It's Ok to Speak Up in Class
Probably my entire school career I have been terrified of saying something stupid in class. This was the first class I've felt comfortable in from Kindergarten through my Masters Degree. It could be that as an adult, I've finally realized that it doesn't matter if you say something stupid or ask a silly question. What matters most is the process of learning. Or it could be that I feel far more comfortable in creative-type classes. Or maybe I had more to contribute to this class. Whatever this new burst of confidence means, I'm holding onto it and hoping for more opportunities to share my thoughts.Have you been putting off trying something new or enrolling in a Super Heroines, Etc. class? Consider signing up for one of our fun classes that are upcoming in the next few months! It's an incredibly welcoming environment and we'd love to have you!
