Three Geeky Ways to Give Back
From past surveys, we know SHE members want opportunities to volunteer and give back to the community. But because we’re awesome, ambitious geeks and nerds, it can be hard to find the time to volunteer for traditional projects. These three geeky ways to give back can be done from home and use your geeky skills:
- The Harry Potter Alliance: According to their website: “The Harry Potter Alliance turns fans into heroes. We’re changing the world by making activism accessible through the power of story. Since 2005, we’ve engaged millions of fans through our work for equality, human rights, and literacy.” While they offer more traditional volunteer opportunities, like serving on committees and running their social media, they also run book drives pretty regularly. Or you can join a chapter - many of them run volunteer projects throughout the year.
- Extra Life: Extra Life is a yearly fundraising event that revolves around games! Basically you get donations for doing what you love - playing games. In 2015, Super Heroines, Etc. will have our own team! All of the money you raise for Extra Life 2015 will go directly to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital of your choice. You can register for free here to join the Super Heroines, Etc. Extra Life team. Find out more about how to participate in Extra Life here.
- Skills for Change: Described on their website as “It’s online volunteering… for busy people (like you). Non-profits post challenges and volunteers choose the opportunities based on their own expertise. If you’re a designer, like social media, or have skills in writing or fundraising, this is a great way to do quick, easy volunteer work.
There are numerous other non-traditional volunteer opportunities, but these are definitely geared toward geeks! If you can’t find an opportunity you like on this list, SHE volunteers regularly throughout the year so keep an eye out for our next opportunity. And remember, you can always volunteer for SHE since we’re a non-profit!
