#ThrowbackThursday Geeky High School Edition

Happy #ThrowbackThursday! This week we asked our board members and volunteers to share what they were nerding out about in high school. Some folks are still nerding out about the same awesome interests even today!

Marissa Roe:

“I was /am really into rocks and minerals, astronomy, cloud formations, baking, and scavenger hunts.

 

I’m not really sure why someone would be interested in this stuff. I liked minerals /rocks because they all require specific environmental factors to even be created. They’re beautiful!

 

Astronomy is also interesting and has a lot of folklore associated with the constellations. Celestial events are frequent but go unnoticed by most.

 

Baking is more liked working in a lab under lab conditions with a delicious outcome. Meticulously following the instructions is required. Rewards for working well with the ingredients are delicious. Failure to follow instructions leads to undesirable and sometimes not so good tasting results.

 

Scavenger hunts are awesome!!! Working with my friends to solve puzzles was great!

 

Oh yeah and I loved that Windows 95 game ‘the lost mind of Dr. Brain!’”

Stephanie Rushing

“Gaming – JRPG mainly on Playstation. Geology/Archaeology/Astronomy – I really don’t know why. I loved how things formed and the thought of digging up the mysteries of the earth. Greek mythology.”

Sarah Pritchard

“Star Wars novelizations. Because awesome. Because Mara Jade. Because Timothy Zahn. Because Star Wars. Also Linguistics! Why do we talk the way we do? Why/how do we judge others on the way they talk? How does language change? Does language change our brain? Or does our brain change language? Or both? How does language affect social justice? How do social trends affect language? Steven Pinker’s The Language Instinct and Robin Lakoff’s Language and a Woman’s Place are good places to start.

 

Oh also independent bookselling. Because every nerd should get paid to have access to All Of The Books. Rebel Bookseller by Andrew Laties is a good read on bookselling. Also Time Was Soft There, which is (a true story) about a guy who quits his job (I think maybe because some kind of organized crime syndicate is after him??), goes to Paris poor and unemployed and gets to not only work at Shakespeare and Company, but actually live in the bookstore.”

Carolyn Noe

“In high school, I was really into Cardcaptor Sakura and if you haven’t checked it out, you totally should. Sadly, when they brought it from Japan to America, they focused more on the male character, but the original Japanese version is amazing and cute. I was also into The Princess Diaries book series – so much better than the movie. Meg Cabot, the author, is sooooo funny and everything the main character thinks is something I thought in high school.”
